Bonjour Brioche [?]
416-406-1250
Fifteen years after opening, this tiny 20-seater is still cash-only and serving practically the same menu—and folks from far and wide are still lining up around the block for buttery French breakfast and lunch. A satisfyingly crunchy, pretty well perfect baguette stuffed with medium-done roast beef (though the menu promises “rare”), thick, creamy brie and properly garlicky aioli comes with a side mixed green salad—over-salted and drowning in vinegary dressing—while an otherwise tasty special of potato salad with arugula, heirloom cherry tomatoes, sweet pepper, olives, purple onion and fennel could have used a sprinkling of the white stuff. Sweet pastries are the real deal: thin-crusted pecan tart is rich and buttery, and lemon tart is sour enough for European palates—and the curd is the stuff of legend, with each 10-inch tart using the juice of 25 lemons and three limes, or so enthused the uncharacteristically chummy waiter. The tiny wine and beer list offers enough to get one through lunch or brunch, and the covered patio provides another 20 seats and a front row seat for colourful Queen East people-watching. Closed Monday.
