Authentically Mexican meals are on the menu of this north Toronto location of a two-store mini-chain, but you’ll have to brave some rough obstacles to enjoy them. Tlacoyos, house-made corn cakes topped with sour cream, black beans and freshly made green salsa, make a creamy, fragrant starter. Skip the predictable enchiladas and chimichangas for equally rich but more interesting options, especially cochinita pibil—cubes of pork steamed in banana leaves with achiote paste—that bubble with spice and smoke but a touch too much oil. Frayed canvas banquettes, clay masks and dim lighting make the small room feel like a Tex-Mex basement, but that doesn’t stop families from dropping in for a belly-filling meal.
