In the summer, sun-soaked patios are sacred spaces in Toronto, and El Trompo’s is one of Kensington Market’s most enjoyable. Inside, the room is cheerfully tacky, with sponge-painted walls and bright, rug-covered tables. Tacos, Trompo’s namesake dish, are served five per platter on small corn tortilla rounds. The pork-and-pineapple combo of al pastor is slightly dry here but otherwise spicy and sweet, and delicious when topped with tableside tomatillo salsa. The beef fajitas have more in common with their limp, stir-fry style cousins served in chain restaurants and are blanketed with melted cheese. The zucchini-flower-filled quesadilla is slightly sour but has thicker, masa-made tortillas. As side of queso fundido, a melted cheese pot served plain or with mushrooms or sausage is unctuous and addictive. On weekends, this is one of the few places in the city to get fresh churros; shoestrings of fried dough dusted in cinnamon and sugar. But on weekdays, skip the humdrum desserts. Closed Monday.
