Just beyond the gentrifying halo of Wychwood Barns, El Rincon’s small front dining room adds colourful warmth to an otherwise nondescript block. Inside, it feels like a crowded dinner party at mama’s casa—orange walls, folk art and handcrafted pottery. Almost everything that comes out of the kitchen is worthy of appreciation, if not flat-out devotion. Sopa di lima’s greenish-yellow broth is electric with lime and complemented by shredded chicken, diced green peppers and carrots and tiny fresh peas. Mains are a mix of meat, seafood and tortilla dishes. Al pastor tacos are sweet and moist; the tender marinated pork mixed with pineapple chunks and topped with cilantro and onion doesn’t need a squeeze of fresh lime, but it’s a damn good idea. Retaining the capacity to eat dessert is difficult, as the generous main courses are served with rice, beans and salad, but soldier on to the heavenly tres leches cake. Sixteen tequilas on offer. Mains $10–$28.
