Rules of engagement: do not come here looking for a quiet or relaxing bite to eat. Never make the goyish mistake of coming to the neighbourhood on a busy Friday afternoon. In fact, don’t schlep up here for lunch unless you are in the grip of a fierce craving for kosher falafel. Expect extreme carb loading. If, however, you find yourself cruising this part of Toronto for fresh bagels (What a Bagel), amazing rotisserie chicken (Toronto Kosher) or possibly the best cream cheese on the planet (Daiter’s), do drop in to this homely little kosher diner for pitas stuffed impossibly full of crunchy falafel, creamy tahini, silky hummus and fresh fried or pickled veggies. The nondescript room is full of locals, families and school kids, some of them tucking into freshly made waffles topped with soft-serve ice cream. The place is cacophonous and there’s no table service, so everyone seems in a hurry to eat and anxious to grab one of the coveted tables upstairs. The display counter is stacked with potato latkes, börek (a savoury turnover stuffed with mashed potato and other goodies), garlic knots (pizza dough balls, oily and garlicky-good) and breaded cauliflower, all of which are pretty yummy despite being made well in advance and reheated per order (the falafel, on the other hand, is freshly made). The pizzas, however, are cold, congealed and uninviting, but with so many salads, sandwiches, platters and pitas to choose from, it hardly matters. Desserts are bland but with a belly full of potato in so many tasty incarnations, blintzes will be the last thing on your mind.
