So many restaurants in Koreatown drag expectations with them as they race to the bottom of the price ladder. Korea House stays classy, paying close attention to even the smallest piece of fish: the kitchen’s deft broiling lends a side of unadorned mackerel a skin as crackling as crème brûlée. A tofu stew is made of fire even once it stops bubbling; after fishing out the mussels, shrimp and soft tofu, the spicy broth must be eaten in between bites of rice, or all at once, like a hundred-yard dash. Skip the bossam (the pork tastes as though it has been frozen) and opt instead for the satisfying ja jang myun, ground pork and black bean sauce over spaghetti-like noodles—a satisfying dish. Yellow wallpaper and purple pillars may be a tad Pee Wee’s Playhouse, but the staff is endearingly earnest. Call ahead to secure a private booth.
