Cho Dang Soon Tofu [?]
416-234-1161
Most people wouldn’t notice this place, tucked into a dated strip mall on the border of Etobicoke and Mississauga, if the roof was on fire. But it’s certainly worth a special trip. A true mom-and-pop joint—they wear matching red polo shirts and white paper hats—the tiny space is full of university students and multi-generational families. Banchan brings a veritable buffet of small dishes, the star of which is two just-fried yellow croakers that could easily incite a chopstick duel for the last crisp, succulent bite. Tofu is made from scratch every morning, and its creamy texture is best appreciated cold with a sauce of soy, sugar and scallions for dipping. A softer tofu is the star of the namesake dish, a spicy, savoury, porridge-like stew with tiny shreds of braised pork. Brought to the table at a full boil, it’s enriched with a small egg that’s cracked tableside. Service is remarkably quick and efficient for a two-person operation. Mains $8–$13.
