There’s something bizarrely incongruous about the Thompson Hotel’s sushi restaurant: the sleek black-andgrey-decor seems meant for refined, well-crafted plates, but the leather-bound menu, filled with gold-cornered pages of cheery, tacky pictures, looks like it was stolen from a generic maki joint. The meal follows suit: the food is well prepared, but it isn’t very ambitious, and it’s clearly aimed at unadventurous western palates. A sashimi starter brings a trio of lean, fresh tuna that doesn’t need the globs of wasabi-tinged mayo pooled under each piece. The grilled seafood platter is a (mostly) luxurious plate: the scallops, shrimp and lobster are nicely charred and very tender, with the flavour of the crustaceans enhanced by little more than butter. Unfortunately, the accompanying vegetables taste like they came from the frozen food aisle. Desserts, like the
chocolate spring rolls topped with a mound of store-bought whipped cream and treacly caramel sauce, are skippable, but no matter: the crowd—all clad in finely cut Italian suits and slinky mini-skirts—would just as soon finish the meal with another glass of wine or sake-based cocktail. Mains $10–$45.
