It takes chutzpah to open another Japanese restaurant on the Annex’s crowded Maki Row, but owner Ken Zhang, who made his name behind the counter at Japango, offers sushi a cut above that of the local competition—you won’t find tilapia masquerading as snapper here. The clubby black, white and red decor—barely changed from the previous tenant—is so ’80s that you expect to bump into a few members of the Brat Pack hanging out in the bathroom. The sushi dinner brings exquisitely fresh nigiri, including pink albacore tuna brushed with roasted garlic oil and briefly torched Greek sea bream. But there are doubles of everything—one would expect a more varied selection given the price. Terrific tempura includes two fat shrimp and an assortment of veggies cloaked in a light batter crunchy with panko. Salty-sweet yakitori skewers of juicy chicken thigh meat are also first rate, but they’re ordered as apps and arrive after the mains. Mains $9–$19.
