The problem with sushi is its fungibility. With a couple of exceptions (Hiro, Sushi Kaji), nothing distinguishes one raw fish joint from any other in the GTA. When word got around that chef-owner Yasu Ouchi, an acolyte of the legendary sushi master Nobu Matsuhisa, had opened his own restaurant in a Leaside strip mall, many wondered whether Toronto finally had another sushi destination. The answer, for now, is no. The sushi is good, for the most part. One night’s peppery seared tuna tataki stands out, likewise the aburi sushi plate, a delectable assortment of seared salmon belly, scallop, eel and butterfish nigiri. But unfortunately chef Ouchi loves his brûlée torch a little too much. The sushi rolls are undistinguished and, frankly, too large to eat without crumbling. Mains $7–$35.
