Hungry OCAD students pile into this off-Chinatown space for wallet-friendly and belly-filling home-style Japanese options. Filling rice bowls are topped with curls of simmered beef and onions or loose, sweet Japanese curry. Light soy-stained udon noodle soup is christened with seaweed, scallions, aromatic tempura bits, tubular fish cakes and a coddled sunny-side-up egg complete with a golden, jiggly yolk. Hungrier folks can upgrade to a combo that may include a green salad sprinkled with fried shallot chips or a grilled octopus dumpling served on a wafer-thin shrimp cracker. Such challenging dishes as fermented beans and diced boiled octopus with crunchy pickled wasabi root fare better than a mountain of overcooked spinach ohitashi. Mochi ice creams are an amalgamation of the traditional Japanese rice cake with a North American classic: pucks of floral green tea or rich and nutty red bean ice cream encased in thin, chewy, glutinous rice flour dough make for a portable and cool meal closer. Although it’s licensed to serve a selection of Japanese beers and sakes, it might be more appropriate to order the marble-capped Ramune or a cold oolong tea.
