U of T students—many Japanese—flock to this small, homey restaurant for some of the city’s most authentic Japanese noodles. With its wooden beams, kimono-sash wall hangings and haiku pictures, the room is a pleasant hangout in quaint Baldwin Village. The staff can be over-attentive, and the kitchen occasionally falters on non-noodle dishes. Noodles really are the raison d’être here. Tokyo-style ramen is served with a gorgeous, garlicky shoyu-infused chicken broth, tender sliced pork, crunchy greens and silky, fresh noodles. The real hit of the meal is a sukiyaki hotpot, delivering a thrillingly sour and salty broth, firm Sanuki-style udon, shiitake and enoki mushrooms, spinach, sliced beef and tofu. Sweets include a wonderful ice cream made with toasted black sesame seeds and a spot-on anmitsu, a traditional dessert of agar gelatin cubes, green tea ice cream, red bean curd and canned mandarin slices and peaches. Drinks include a decent array of cold sakes.
