Steadfastly popular with Bay Street’s young and restless, the massive bar and heated patio take centre stage at this Keg-owned enterprise. Three semi-private alcoves in the back provide some reprieve from the meat market vibe, though the constant clacking of stilettos on slate floors is distracting. The dauntingly long menu of sushi and Japanese small plates should be pared down to allow the kitchen to focus more on quality. Skewers of crisp pancetta-wrapped eel are a superb spin on surf and turf; a fiery ponzu dip cuts through the fatty flesh. The sushi counter is laden with impeccably fresh seafood, but it’s best to keep it simple, avoiding the muddled modern maki rolls. For raw fish, it’s hard to beat a terrific ceviche of tuna, salmon, mackerel and shrimp barely cured in miso, sake and lime. Miso-marinated pork tenderloin is pink and juicy, though it has the undeniable gaminess of cheap pork. The drink list features pricey sake and an excellent selection of wines by the glass. Polished service. Mains $16–$32.
