Although Kenzo offers plenty of cheap plates the food here is a far cry from the MSG-filled Mr. Noodles that you used to nuke in your college dorm. Large tangles of springy, hand-pulled noodles are cooked al dente and served with spicy soy- or seafood-based broths, all house-made and most under $12. The kitchen’s King of Kings ramen is a jewel box: shredded onion, soft-boiled egg, fish cake, pickled bamboo and three tender slices of pork shoulder. Bones and fat are boiled for hours on end for tonkotsu ramen, giving its broth a buttery richness that in winter is pure pleasure. The yakisoba, a sizzling plate of peppers, onions, chicken and limp ramen, is so soy sauce heavy that the other flavours are drowned out, suggesting Kenzo’s noodles are best served in soup. The space is small enough that diners can hear the staccato of knife chops from the kitchen, and paper lanterns and blow-up beer bottles make it feel like the frenetic Japanese noodle bar it aims to be.
