At the western edge of Riverside’s row of brunch spots, District stands out for being the only Japanese joint. Raw fish dishes are the best bets. Pungent spring onion, perfect cubes of unmarred avocado and fleshy ruby-coloured fish help elevate the tuna tartare. Classic maki are impressively executed: red dragon features still warm battered shrimps and flawlessly textured rice. Signature plates, however, are best ignored: perfectly cooked salmon fillet is overpowered by an unfortunate crust of crushed wasabi peas and a side of abysmally bland edamame mashed potatoes. Sweet saketinis are more sizzle than substance, but the four varieties of loose-leaf green tea are quality. The lone hardworking waitress provides pleasant, practised service. Closed Monday. Small plates $5–$21.
