Not one, but two hostesses affably greet customers at the candlelit Verona, a 155-seat Entertainment District restaurant that looks as though it emerged from a trattoria kit—a faux Venetian fresco, gondola included. The service is perfect, in a blast-from-the-past sort of way. The room is well handled by five servers and two food runners. Plates are whisked away quickly, tables bussed like lightning, and water glasses never dip below the halfway mark. It’s a shame that the food isn’t as impressive. Spaghetti carbonara promises crispy pancetta but arrives with soggy bacon in a dense alfredo sauce that tastes like it emerged from a jar and reappears later in the mediocre mushroom risotto accompanying the osso buco. That veal shank is tender enough in its tangy tomato reduction but would benefit from a little more salt and a longer braise. Verona must count on the majority of its clientele—tourists—being unfamiliar with the LCBO’s price points, because the restaurant’s wine list is chock full of overpriced, average bottles. Forgettable desserts. Mains $14–$30.
