Romagna Mia, the longstanding Italian establishment, was revamped last summer and rechristened Paganelli’s. Its chef and namesake, Gabrielle Paganelli, has preserved the northern culinary charm. The pig-centric house-made salumi plate is one of the best around, highlighted by remarkably thin Parma prosciutto and melt-in-the mouth pancetta; the Parmigiano-Reggiano bowl on the table adds a nice retro touch. An antipasto of fried squid and shrimp is beautifully battered and light, though the tomato sauce dip skimps on the spice. Squid ink tagliolini in a light broth showcases masterful handmade pasta, but the lobster meat is tough. Microwave-reheated lasagna is best avoided in favour of the specialty risottos, especially the version with black truffle pâté and pheasant. Custard-based tiramisu is terrific. Decor, though, still needs work; the bare wood tables are overkill in an overwhelmingly brown colour scheme, and the plastic sleeves on the menus scream East Side Mario’s. Several affordable regional wine options. Mains $9–$35.
