At this lively east end pizzeria, the cramped street-level bar area is best eschewed for a table in the airy warehouse space on the second floor. An early pioneer of the city’s out-of-control Neapolitan pizza craze, Margherita wins the crust contest every time: it’s soft enough to fold without being soggy, and it’s charred without tasting burnt—a testament to skilled pizzaiolos. The Rocco offers just the right balance of sweet tomato sauce, gooey fior di latte, piquant Gorgonzola, spicy sausage and sharp red onion. Unfortunately, the selection of anti-pasti are not executed with the same passion as the pies. Caesar salad is decent, though marred by rosemary-heavy croutons that taste like Pine-Sol. The wine list highlights affordable Italian reds. Prix fixe $27; mains $14–$19.
