A Terroni outpost without the pizza sounds ludicrous, but one bite of Osteria’s dazzling handmade pasta turns crackling crust into a distant memory. The restaurant showcases Pugliese cooking, and the food captures the heel region’s bold, distinct flavours. The pastas bring dense textures and gorgeous construction—impeccable spinach tortelloni with butternut squash is perfectly al dente on the edges, sensually soft in the middle, and excellent orecchiette come in a creamy emulsion of rapini, garlic, chilis, anchovies and buttery toasted breadcrumbs. Porchetta, which has the tendency to dry out, is melt-in-your-mouth moist, terrifically salty and gloriously fatty. Unlike many other Italian restaurants in the city, side dishes are treated with the same love as the mains: perfectly grilled tuna is paired with an elegant sweet-and-sour eggplant caponata. The wine list offers good value, and Terroni’s reputation for sketchy service doesn’t apply here—the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Closed Sunday. Mains $17–$32.
