La Forchetta nestles perfectly between the two opposing forces that make College Street what it is: homey, neighbourhood Italian and slick nightlife. A wine-coloured awning hides an interior that is clean, dark and totally modern. The food is the same—Italian classics updated with panache. The richness of velvety red Arctic muskox bresaola is nicely cut by bitter radicchio, salty parmigiano and a drizzle of sweet vincoto. The veal scaloppini, despite the perfectly cooked shrimp and tender meat, becomes muddled under so-so tomato sauce. Desserts, like one night’s vanilla-maple crème brûlée and chocolate cake, are unexceptional, but the 20-page international wine list more than compensates. Service varies from polished to rough at the edges. Mains $15–$35.
