Not much has changed at this uptown trattoria since it opened 14 years ago: tables are still lacquered with pages from magazines, lamps still hang from the ceiling, and grated parmesan comes in a jam jar. Even the crowd—uptown families and young couples—is the same, but nobody is complaining, especially not about the expansive, affordable menu. A pair of crispy, plump sardines, moist and sweet inside, sit on top of onions, tomatoes and capers that have been sautéed in bright green olive oil. Handmade, pillowy gnocchi swim in a gorgonzola cream sauce that satisfies, despite having too much cream and not enough salty blue cheese. The menu warns that the Canadian rib-eye is “not lean,” but those who enjoy a well-marbled steak will be thrilled with the cross-hatched, peppery piece of juicy, rare meat saturated in a red wine jus. The nearly all-Italian wine list is as no-fuss as the efficient servers. Mains $9.95–$21.95.
