Pizzeria Libretto’s upscale counterpart has only gotten better with the arrival of executive chef Grant van Gameren in the kitchen. The young chef who made charcuterie chic at The Black Hoof has integrated his love of offal and offcuts into the existing menu of house-made pastas. The chicken gizzards are meaty and nicely mild but come with the evening’s lone disappointment: undercooked, gritty orecchiette. Baked kale with king mushrooms and persimmons is as crunchy, salty, tart and pleasurable as a bag of salt and vinegar chips. Desserts, rarely a strong suit for Italian restaurants, rock: the beet and apple tart, with fennel semifreddo, apple cider honey and fennel pollen, has a crackling pastry and a wonderfully deep flavour. The atmosphere is casual and boisterous. Mains $12–$22.
