Utopia is the kind of place that’s so dimly lit you can hardly read the chalkboard wine list; where young bartenders stand on the counter to retrieve a bottle of wine from the top shelf and pour the glass to the brim; where no-nonsense, efficient servers answer “No worries” to just about every request and busy themselves during down times by changing up the indie music on the place’s iPod. Inventive salads, nachos, burritos, burgers and sandwiches are the mainstays. None are revelatory, but all are thoughtfully prepared, generous in portion and super-cheap. The curried potato and chickpea burrito, served with a tamarind dipping sauce, is like a giant samosa. Although it promises raisins, only one can be found, and it might stand up better if the puréed filling was left chunkier. Desserts, like the tangy New York cheesecake, are satisfying enough, but it’s hard to imagine anyone having room left.
