Utopia is the kind of place that’s so dimly lit you can hardly read the wine list handwritten on a chalkboard; where young bartenders stand on the countertop to retrieve a bottle of wine from the top shelf and pour libations nearly up to the brim; where no-nonsense, efficient servers answer “No worries” to just about every request and busy themselves in down times by changing up the indie music on the place’s iPod. Inventive salads, nachos, burritos, burgers and sandwiches are the mainstays, none revelatory but all thoughtfully prepared, generous in portion and super cheap. Take the veggie nachos layered thick with tender white beans, zesty tomato salsa, spicy jalapeño and an obscene amount of gooey cheddar. The curried potato and chickpea burrito served with a tamarind dipping sauce is like a giant samosa. Although it promises raisins, only one can be found—and it might stand up better if the puréed filling was left chunkier. Still, it hits the spot, especially with sides of mixed greens dressed in balsamic vinaigrette and rice and beans. Desserts, like the tangy New York cheesecake, are satisfying enough, but it’s hard to imagine anyone having room left.
