THIS RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED. Inside this Leslieville favourite, lights are kept dim in the three large rooms, all of which exude an air of eclectic shabby chic. Attention to detail—luxurious table linens and comfy banquettes—feels incongruous with the decrepit, dive-bar washrooms. Friendly and efficient servers forget crucial questions, such as asking how one wants a steak done. Still, tasty offerings do emerge. A beet, goat cheese and pistachio salad is simple perfection with toothsome veg and expertly balanced balsamic dressing. Duck prosciutto offers lovely smokiness, but it has a disappointing mealy texture. Likewise, big-eye tuna tartare delivers freshness and a hint of piquant spice but is marred by cloying mustard chili mayo dressing. A main of naturally raised King Cole Peking duck breast (falsely advertised on the menu as “organic”) arrives medium-rare, seared crispy and thinly sliced atop standout vanilla-infused sweet-potato mash and sour cherry jus. Wines skim regions worldwide with little depth. Mains $20–$25.
