Back when west-side men weren’t pseudo-lumberjacks in toques and plaid, and Toronto’s dining gentry was afraid to set foot on Ossington, self-trained chef Tom Thai gambled that he could tempt foodies to venture outside their geographic (if not culinary) comfort zone, and diners have rewarded Thai’s daring by crowding his minimally decorated brick-and-beige dining room ever since. Robustly flavoured, Asian-inspired tapas mostly shine, like the crackling skin and juicy flesh of grilled pike mackerel resting on a sweet-tart yuzu-ponzu sauce, or a cumin-dusted, medium-rare duck breast studded with salty and sour umeboshi plums. Sautéed Berkshire belly with kimchee lacks the depth of flavour found in Koreatown. The desserts—black rice pudding and overcooked green tea crème brûlèe—haven’t changed since the place opened, showing a lack of imagination where sweets are concerned. Remarkably affordable wine list and delightful, poised wait staff. Mains $5–$22.
