Bistro Camino [?]
416-698-0283
Over the last 20 years, Camino has morphed into a bistro with European and a few Japanese touches. The dining room could easily double for a 1950s Chinese restaurant, but the shockingly affordable dishes are bound to please just about everyone. An umetini cocktail, made with vodka and Japanese plum wine, is the perfect pre-dinner tipple. Rich house-smoked salmon shines in its simplicity, as does sliced beef carpaccio with a hint of searing and a dab of dill-infused wasabi. The presentation of most dishes is inventive, like a moist fillet of Cajun-spiced sole topped with sliced lime in an artfully wrapped banana-leaf package that is sliced open table-side. Mains come with as many as seven sides, like steamed broccoli in hollandaise, white bean purée and creamy corn polenta. Mealy roasted potatoes should be taken off the menu altogether. Save room for the chocolate-laced profiterole, stuffed with a scoop of vanilla ice cream the size of a baseball. Mains $14–$20.
