Even 41 years after Indian Rice Factory introduced a then white-bread city to curry, the kitchen is still producing interesting (though not always well-executed) dishes. A tiny, woefully over-broiled lobster tail is dry, tough and fishy tasting, made palatable only by fragrant, bright green coriander chutney. But fantastic mains swoop in and save the day. Elk shikari is rich, tender and gingery. Tender-crisp sautéed green beans are delicately seasoned with hints of coconut milk, dry-roasted lentils and caramelized shallot. Creamy raita, garlicky naan and fragrant, aged basmati pilao rice accompany beautifully. If there’s room for dessert, the gulab gamun and kulfi are house-made and delicious. The wine list is adventurous, the service serene and the back patio with its trickling fountain and wisteria enchanting. Closed Monday. Mains $15–$20.
