Gracious owners make this simple Scarborough spot a pleasure to eat in, even if language barriers sometimes mean they can’t fully answer questions about the food. The traditional Sri Lankan dishes are, without exception, mouth-watering. That’s why the takeout counter is always busy and the back room consistently full of multi-generational families. Signature hoppers are thin bowl-shaped crêpes; there’s a crisp, dry version; a soft one with cooked egg; and a coconut milk version, which has an exceptionally creamy centre. They make lovely receptacles for various curries, such as the thick, savoury mutton curry. To finish, vattilapam is a rich, dense egg custard, made brown and sweet with palm sugar. Unlicensed.
