Weekend nights mean friendly chaos at this busy, unassuming room on the western edge of Christie Pits. A no-reservation policy guarantees a packed bar of hungry loungers, while a steady stream of takeout customers jostles for cash-register space. Everyone’s here for well-judged, long-simmered north Indian favourites. Dal makhni is black lentils topped with matchsticks of ginger and liberally sauced with tomatoes and cream. In lamb vindaloo, generous chunks of meat swim in a medium-weight, vinegar-tamarind-zinged sauce. There’s no soft-pedalling for Western palates: “spicy” means spicy, and “very spicy” means a whole lot of Cheetah draft beer or a glass of Pierre Sparr gewürztraminer. Cool off with shahi shrimp, a chili-free dish of six or so juicy crustaceans in a sauce of coconut milk and coriander. Fluffy naan is hot and steamy; vegetable biryani offers grain-perfect basmati studded with soft, stewed baby corn and carrots plus still-crunchy cashews. Super-sweet Indian desserts are on offer, but after all that, who has room? Mains $8–$14.
