Its trendy days may be behind it (Greg Kinnear hasn’t been spotted in a while), but 17 years in, Pan is no longer self-conscious about setting itself apart from local competition. It simply feels like an authentic Greek taverna. The candlelit room is framed by wine bottle–lined walls, and an archway leads to a cozy back room with a fireplace. On a quiet night, an enthusiastic server lingers by the table to chat. Despite the hospitality, comfort food may not be a specialty: moussaka lacks flavour but oozes surplus tomato sauce. Ingredients are better than the local standard, though, doing justice to straightforward appetizers like tender grilled octopus, and providing subtle pleasures in a grilled lamb loin topped with fresh fig and an orange-cinnamon glaze. A rich dessert of fig and port ice cream topped with a cinnamon and red wine reduction is a gooey Greek take on the sundae. Large portions mean sharing is best; it’s still the Danforth, after all. Mains $17–$32.
