From the Danforth to Richmond Hill, almost all GTA Greek menus read the same: souvlaki, moussaka, calamari—fried or grilled—various dips and mezze. This big—about 80 seats—and bustling (families everywhere!) Etobicoke taverna has been doing a little better than average since 1995. The room is prettier than most, with exposed brick, warm wood and cozy booths under pergolas; even more promising is the fact that each oak table is outfitted with a bottle of bright green olive oil and proper salt and pepper mills. Deep-fried calamari dipped in garlicky tzatziki is buttery-tender, but the breading is mushy and oily. Loukaniko, grilled, spicy pork sausage, has kick and tons of flavour; the moussaka, on the other hand, is dry and stodgy. The wine list is ordinary; ask about the secret stash of good, affordable vintage Greek wines. Servers are on Aegean time, as in slow, but they’re contagiously cheerful and thoughtful. Desserts are an outsourced afterthought.
