Restaurants located in the busiest destination neighbourhoods can often get away with serving mediocre, overpriced food while joints off the beaten path have to try harder. For two years, 12-seat Folia Grill has been doing just that—trying harder and doing better than most of the huge, packed Greek joints on the Danforth. Hidden away on Pape near Cosburn—decidedly not in Greektown—this tiny taverna turns out some of the freshest and tastiest casual Greek cuisine you’ll find west of the Mediterranean. Village salad is a mountain of bright red, white and green: field tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, fantastic ripe olives and an impressive slab of imported Greek feta are simply dressed in very good olive oil and oregano. Greek fries bring a spartan version of Quebec-style poutine, with lemon sauce, crumbled feta and oregano. Biftekia—grilled meatballs of beef, pork, garlic and mint—are also drizzled in lemon sauce and can be served with a gargantuan pile of addictive, deep-fried breaded zucchini wedges. A soft, thick grilled pita is stuffed with moist marinated shaved chicken, tomato, red onion, a few fries and garlicky tzatziki. Counter service only.
