Whether it’s lunch or dinner, the seven picnic tables at Tacos el Asador are always occupied, takeout diners form a scrum around the cash register, and hungry locals peek in through the door to confirm that there is no space left. This is the kind of place where it’s best to leave the big handbag at home; you have to turn sideways to squeeze past the tables. People who dine in use double-shelled tacos, crunchy or soft, as salsa-delivery vehicles. Pupusas are popular, but they’re outclassed by fluffy, corn-sweetened tamales. Flavour-packed bowls of pozole teem with chickpeas, chicken and pork. Every table gets large bowls of salsa and thick-sliced jalapeños. Rather than complaining that the tiny room has no ventilation, think of it as a sauna with spicy food. Cash only.
