United Bakers Dairy Restaurant [?]
416-789-0519
This bustling, meat-free delicatessen has been the torchbearer for Jewish dairy restaurants since 1912, operated by the Ladovsky family for the entirety of its long run. Siblings Ruth and Philip are the third generation in charge, and the restaurant hasn’t changed one iota in decades. The sense of community is unequalled: friends kibitz, children cavort and retirees linger for hours over tea and crosswords. The soups are all vegetarian; the rib-sticking bean and barley is deservedly famous among regulars. The clubhouse deluxe is a delightful double-decker of silky lox, tomato, crunchy cukes, onions and cream cheese on moist dark rye. Dull, doughy pastries disappoint; you’ll fare much better at Haymishe Bagel Shop down the street. Unlicensed. Mains $6–$14.
