The bustling lunchtime crowd at the Thompson Hotel’s 24-hour diner is a cross-section of King West PYTs, including architects, artists and fashion photographers. Things quiet down at dinner, when the Armani skinny jeans give way to the shorts and white socks of American tourists looking for a familiar taste of home. Appetizers are not the kitchen’s strong suit, but they’re superfluous considering the gargantuan portions of the mains. A superb Dagwood-esque club sandwich teeters on a wooden board, a double decker of moist herbed chicken breast, smoky bacon, ripe tomato and mayo. Topped with focaccia crisps, a first-rate mac-and-cheese brings a cast iron pan filled with al dente cavatappi swimming in béchamel, rich with Parmesan, white cheddar, asiago and truffle oil.
