Perched up on a hill like a friendly version of Chateau Bates, this redbrick Victorian at Peninsula Ridge is one of Lincoln County’s more elegant dining rooms, a popular spot for romantic trysts and dressed-up celebrations. In warmer months, the patio—surely Niagara’s most picturesque—offers a breathtaking view of undulating vineyards, Lake Ontario and Toronto’s tiny skyline. Despite spring’s bloom, chef-owner Ross Midgley’s menu is mired in a wintry snowdrift of root vegetables and rib-sticking sides. Mushroom soup is a thick, bowl-scraper; a few drops of truffle oil enhance rather than bully the delicate fungi flavour. Perfectly timed baked halibut is given a sweet, briny crust of crab and citrus zest; a green peppercorn and saffron vinaigrette flatters the fish, but whipped potatoes bring too much white to the plate. For these prices, the kitchen could try harder. A fabulous dark chocolate semi-freddo topped with a sweet-tart sauce of last summer’s cherries is like an adult sundae from the Black Forest. The wine list ventures deep into Peninsula Ridge’s cellar, though the selection by the glass is disappointingly meagre (but grows in tourist season). Service is first class. Mains $24—$38.
