Lynn Crawford and Lora Kirk’s rustic Riverdale restaurant has greatly improved in the past year, and it’s all thanks to the arrival of former Top Chef Canada contestant Ryan Gallagher in the kitchen. The nightly four-course prix fixe menu is based around local and seasonal ingredients, and the hearty food tastes just like Mom’s—if Mom was a top chef and happened to have boisterous singing waiters hanging around the house. On one visit, an heirloom potato salad has the perfect balance of acid and fat from sharp blue cheese and fresh horseradish; Crawford’s famous cheddar biscuits sop up the leftover vinaigrette. Grilled flank steak with caramelized onions and rosemary jus is meltingly tender—quite a feat with a tough cut. It’s served with rich, cheesy polenta, slightly sweet black kale and mild roasted cauliflower in a white bean and chervil pesto. It’s easy to get stuffed on the heaping portions, but there are still two more courses: an artisanal cheese du jour served with house-made preserves, and dessert: a decadent (and decidedly not local) coconut-pecan cream pie. True to the restaurant’s local mandate, the wine list focuses on Ontario bottles, and the card helpfully suggests pairings for each course. Closed Sunday and Monday. Prix fixe $49.
