Claudio Aprile’s downtown tapas lounge wants desperately to be cool. It’s tricked out with exploded aluminum tabletops, ironic blown-up vintage photos and a shocking pink accent wall, while the speakers unapologetically blare ’90s grunge. It looks great, but sometimes the self-consciously hip facade distracts from the kitchen’s spectacular cooking. Even the most zealous brussels sprouts haters will succumb to their charms here—they’re wonderfully salty and sweet, caramelized and garnished with bacon and sherry vinegar. A fillet of sticky, sugary miso-glazed black cod is the rich centrepiece of a bowl of soba noodles swimming in an umami-rich broth zinged with a hint of yuzu. Desserts are sensational. A modernist twist on trifle layers yogurt, sponge cake, dulce de leche and raspberry shards made with liquid nitrogen. Service is friendly, if a little harried. Affordable international wines (with a few splurges). Cocktails, like soda spiked with house-infused orange, blueberry and sage vodka, are insipid and disappointing. Small plates $4–$29.
