Nota Bene is at the intersection of MuchMusic, the Four Seasons Centre and city hall, which means it attracts one of the most diverse crowds of any fine-dining restaurant in the city. On a recent Thursday, tables were packed with suburban families celebrating birthdays, wheel-greasers massaging their clients’ egos, and serious foodies curious to try chef David Lee’s Asian- and Italian-inspired food. With over 60 tables and a separate bar area, the immense, tastefully decorated room is large enough to hold the different subcultures without any awkward overlaps. The menu offers something for everyone: meat and potatoes (steak frites, a beef brisket burger) for conservative eaters and more unusual Asian fusions for the adventurous (an appetizer of Tunisian octopus and kimchee, for example). The simplest dishes on the menu shine. On one night, a plate of butter-poached white asparagus topped with gossamer-thin curls of duck prosciutto isn’t much to look at, but each mouth-melting bite bursts with spring flavours. Likewise, the roasted hen, seasoned with little more than thyme and garlic, is tender, smoky and flavourful. Desserts, including a summer-fresh rhubarb crisp topped with vanilla frozen yogurt, are just as thoughtful. The team of knowledgeable servers works the room with military precision. Mains $22–$45.
