Many Danforth restaurants have come and gone since Globe opened six years ago, but the bistro remains the strip’s special occasion destination. The decor is austere—frosted glass panels, white linen, a bare tree lit starkly against a blank wall—but is balanced by half-price wine specials on Sundays and Amy Winehouse on the stereo. The crowd is eclectic, comprised on a weekday night of east-end moms, lapsed jocks in baseball caps and empty nesters in glam Yorkville uniforms. Chef Daniel Sanders’s cooking is superb, from the unanticipated amuse straight through to dessert. A starter tray brings rainbow trout, tarragon scones and cranberry marmalade plated in discrete piles—the elements are deliciously fun to mix and match. A sampler of porcine pieces (ears, smoked loin, terrine) is served surprisingly in an arugula salad The combination of the meat and peppery greens brings sharply contrasting textures and a powerhouse of flavour. In a Dover sole dish, the fish (just a hair overcooked) is the least interesting thing on the plate—it’s the combination of fennel, Ping Pong ball–sized mussels and a recommended riesling that dazzles, especially when chased by some crunchy split green beans. For dessert, pear cannoli are flaky and filled with whisper-light pecorino fresco. The bible of a wine list has many excellent, affordable selections, and the pairings recommended on the menu are smart and intuitive. Servers look starched, but are polite and knowledgeable. Closed Monday. Mains $19–$35.
