The kitschy dining room is at odds with the kitchen's thoughtful, contemporary cooking, but if you can get past the trippy casino carpet and the shiny upholstered furniture, there’s much to recommend. The menu focuses largely on local and sustainable ingredients. For example, virtually every component of a starter salad comes from Ontario—Slegers greens, Kernal farm peanuts, Prince Edward County goat cheese and dressing made with honey from the restaurant’s rooftop hives. Big-eye tuna, seared so it’s almost iridescent, is served on baby arugula, chunks of peekytoe crab, truffled potatoes and zippy horseradish aïoli in another creative salad. A plate of tender, piping hot veal cheeks sitting in an expertly reduced jus pairs beautifully with a cabernet-merlot blend from Tawse, one of many Ontario wineries given top billing on the hefty international list. Simple desserts, like a toothsome apple crumble with a perfect fruit-to-crust ratio, taste like excellent home cooking.
