Ten years on, this King West wine bar remains a welcome haven for wine lovers. When Lais Hotel Properties (Prince of Wales, Millcroft Inn) purchased the restaurant in 2010, they had the good sense not to try to fix what wasn’t broken. Chef Michael Wilson remains at the stoves, and his cooking is as focused and flavourful as ever. A velvety lamb’s lettuce salad gets brightness, crunch and creaminess from pickled carrots, Marcona almonds and creamy spiced yogurt, respectively. Seared tuna picks up on Asian themes with eggplant, pea shoots and soy-ginger dressing. A Berkshire pork chop with spaetzle and curried apple sauce is cooked expertly, but verges on too salty. Clever and affordable wine promotions ($1 corkage on Mondays, cost plus $10 wines on Wednesdays) give the staff a chance to share their considerable wine knowledge. Mains $23–$42.
