This quaint cottage stands out from the other sleek, upscale dining temples in this city, with a pinky-taupe colour scheme and wood furniture that feel inspired by Country Living. Chef-owner Herbert Barnsteiner’s continentally and seasonally inspired menu is as rustic as the decor. The baked crab cake with charred corn, grilled sweet onion salad and chipotle aïoli is a very pleasant way to start. The cake has large chunks of crab in it and tastes robustly of crustacean. The charred corn is a lovely flavour accent. Grilled rings of tender calamari, with roasted garlic, capers and lemon brown butter, are savoury, tart, briny and just plain spectacular. But bland truffled gnocchi don’t deserve to share a plate with the rosy, juicy flesh and crackling skin of a perfect duck breast. Desserts offer fewer thrills, but a slightly dry sticky toffee pudding soaked in a bold rum caramel sauce still provides a happy conclusion. Mains $19–$29.
