Set in an atrium off the InterContinental’s lobby, this bright, sweeping space overlooks a patch of Toronto overrun with tourists, conventioneers and Blue Jays fans. Expectations never run high for a restaurant in a dated hotel, but the food is solid, if a bit overpriced. On one night, tuna stuffed with delicate snow crab is a terrific appetizer, dipped in tempura batter and flash fried for a crisp exterior and rare centre; tangy ponzu and bold wasabi mayo give the dish some added sparkle. A duo of beef features a juicy hunk of tenderloin under herbaceous chimichurri sauce and a succulent short rib braised in red wine. Pan-roasted sablefish is perfectly timed, though its bed of al dente Israeli couscous, roasted squash and shiitakes is slightly overwhelmed by a too-salty soy broth. Tasting more like a fruit crisp from a home baker than a pastry chef, a giant ramekin brims with pears and cherries under an overly sweet oat-pecan crumble and a melting scoop of light, house-churned vanilla ice cream. The wine list won’t win any awards for originality, but there is a decent selection under $50. Service is positively American in its genuine friendliness. Mains $24–$45.
