Past St. Clair West’s pricy bistros and comfort-food hot spots, homely and serviceable Mi Tierra transport diners to South America via hearty utilitarian fare and kitschy wall murals of Colombian countryside vistas. The 14-year veterans know their clients, packing the place on weekends with live music and warm touches, like the handwritten sign that says “Please wait to be seated” in Spanish and the cans of cream soda–like “Colombiana” pop. Starters, like the crisp ground-beef-and-potato-stuffed empanadas, a chewy white arepa, or even the traditionally ketchup-spiked shrimp ceviche, are good but should be eaten lightly because the signature main, bandeja paisa, could feed a family of four. The archetypal Colombian plate is a heaping smorgasbord of creamy beans, well-done marinated beef, chorizo, a thicker-than-your-finger strip of crisp-cooked bacon, sweet and meaty pan-fried plantains, half a perfect avocado and the obligatory scoop of long-grain white rice topped with a fried egg. Trucha rellena, a whole trout filled with a creamy seafood sauce, is too fishy to enjoy, but accompanying savoury plantain pancakes go from vaguely bland to addictive in just a few bites. Service is friendly and knowledgeable. Mains $10–$17.
