This delightful Chinese seafood house sits deep in the heart of residential Scarborough. Along with the usual live fish tanks, the sparkly chandeliers and heavy, ochre-coloured drapes make the quiet room feel special. The menu offers so many varied seafood treats that it’s all too easy to over-order. Stuffed and fried crab claws are a must—piping hot, filled with a mixture of crab, shrimp and egg and served with a tangy vinegar dip. Crisp-fried grouper fillets look less than appealing, smothered by a gelatinous sauce, but the chunks of plump, fresh crab win the argument. Squares of creamy steamed tofu topped with shrimp paste and doused in a soy-sesame sauce are good; when hit by the fresh tang of raw green onion, they become outstanding. The only ho-hum dish on this night is sautéed Chinese greens, which are stringy and dull. Firm lychee-goji gelées and almond-crusted white bean paste balls come with the bill and are an appropriately small finish after such a feast. Limited wine selection. Mains $15–$30.
