This massive room, with its 40-odd flying saucer-sized tables, regularly fills to capacity. Three generations can and do fit around these tables, making for a noisy but cheerful atmosphere. The upmarket menu is long, with whole pages devoted to shark’s fin (Alaskan king crab bisque for $68 a bowl, for example), abalone, and other pricey delicacies. Jiggly ribbons of jellyfish are fantastic tossed in toasted sesame oil and contrast perfectly with the tart, sweet, vinegar-dressed batons of crunchy daikon that lurk underneath. Honey-glazed barbecue pork is just sweet and fatty enough, and perfectly seasoned with star anise, while wok-fried snow peas are plump, super-fresh and crunchy, tossed with hoisin and rich ground pork. Asian-spiced chicken brings a bird roasted to golden in the deep fryer and served with a tiny dish of salt, pepper and cinnamon for dusting. Beautifully moist, buttery black cod is done a disservice by breading. Service ranges from indifferent to obsequious but is generally efficient. The wine list offers one Italian red and one Italian white, so go for a Tsingtao instead. Mains $25–$50.
