On a stretch of Queen West that offers no shortage of roti shops (there are three on as many blocks), Bacchus Roti remains a reliable and tasty choice, particularly for the Parkdale hipster set. Roti come in many variations—goat, beef, shrimp and jerk chicken—and can be layered with spinach, potato and butternut squash. Vegetarian versions include channa (chickpeas), potato and green beans. The thin shells are deliciously buttery. Jerk chicken is moist and spicy, but beef is dry and sinewy. A side of sweet potato fries delights with crispy, salty sweetness, though spinach sautéed with onions has an oddly unpleasant floral taste. Doubles—traditional West Indian chickpea sandwiches—are better with some sweet chutney to balance the curry. For dessert, a flaky peanut butter star cake is addictive. Service is fast and courteous, and the decor of white leather banquettes, huge drum lampshades, ornate mirrors and twiggy wall hangings—all courtesy of a 2008 upgrade from TV’s Restaurant Makeover—is a notch above the usual Parkdale grunge. Grace ginger beer is a treat.
