Even though Rod Bowers sold his beloved bistro in 2010, the new owners have kept the name and the 1930s wood-panelled dining car decor. The new menu reads like a compendium of culinary clichés: steamed mussels, grilled veal chop and crème brûlée. Though the food is bereft of Bowers’ creativity, the execution is rock solid. Fried calamari is done to a T, with a light, crisp coating, tender squid and fabulous aïoli that’s sharp with lemon and capers. A fat fist of succulent short rib quivers at the mere suggestion of a fork, and its tomato-kissed braising juices provide a slightly dense yet flavourful sauce for potato gnocchi. The pouding chômeur is a square of warm, moist vanilla cake drenched in a smoky-sweet maple toffee sauce. Considering its modest ambitions, the wine list could offer more bottles under $45. Chummy service.
