Since the mid-’90s, this swank space has been the special-occasion restaurant for the northern GTA, where families send a child off to university, gentlemen with pinky rings seal the deal on a third date, and wealthy couples toast the end of the week with a big-ticket California cab. Some of the starch has been taken out of its collar, thanks to the lively bar area and it’s fruity cocktails, pulsating house music and a tapas menu. With an emphasis on luxurious proteins, chef and co-owner Stephen Perrin’s menu hasn’t changed much over the years—except for the prices, which are eye-bulgingly high in the age of the mid-range bistro. Sweet, herb-rubbed scallops are kissed by the grill and accessorized with buttery chanterelles and a gorgeous, silky purée of caramelized squash. The juicy steak is served with roasted fingerlings, glazed baby beets and buttered green beans. Service is friendly, but the attentiveness factor is noticeably cranked up for free-spending regulars. Mains $26–$50.
